Maria Ávila was born in Valença, RJ, Brazil. Since she was a child she has worked with art, painting fabric, and always drawing. She married very early and with her family went to live in England in 1973. There she visited museums and traveled the continent. After the first time she visited the Van Gogh Museum, Avila only wanted to paint and do art work. In 1977 she went to live in Spain, for 1 year. Avila has been living in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, BR since 1976.
Once she settled in Juiz de Fora she started painting as a self taught artist and making exhibitions, solo and juried competitions. Looking for more knowledge, she attended the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF). There they used live models for the artists. Her teachers' idea was for her to go to Rio de Janeiro, and there she had classes with Prof. Ganem, at Parque Lage Art Center and also with Aloisio Carvão, at MAM, Modern Art Museum. After completion she met Luiz Verri, who invited her to share his studio, for the next 2 years. Afterwards Maria Avila kept painting by herself.
In 1985 Avila traveled to Mexico, and made many sketches for future art; in 1987, 88. 89, she traveled to Europe, visiting many Museums and Galleries in Finland, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Holland. While visiting all these countries she did many sketches for future use for her art. Lately, Avila has been traveling to US, mainly to the Pacific Coast, painting and visiting Galleries.
In 1987 Avila got an award for the best Art Exhibition of the year in Juiz de Fora, MG. Since then Avila has had many exhibitions throughout Brazil, working not only with oil on canvas, but also acrylic, mixed media and collage. Besides this, she paints on silk and makes papier maché, creating original pieces.
At the present time Maria Avila is rated as one of the top 5 artists in her city.Maria Avila lived in Sweet Home, Oregon, for four years with her husband, Lee Dunning, and now they are back living in Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil.
